Rescue, not retail!

When the time comes to add a new furry family member to your family, there are loads of questions any new pet parent has. Whether you have had a pet before or you’re brand new, it’s O.K to ask questions! In fact, I highly encourage you to ask as many as you can think of! But the biggest deciding factor should always be, where should you go?? While society has made a huge push towards “designer mix breeds”, ultimately you are still getting a “mix breed” dog. And lets be honest, a puppy or kitten can melt any animal lovers heart and make you want to take them all home! But when we get down to it, where you get your fur baby from is just as important as making sure you get the right one for you! Sometimes they choose us and other times we choose them! But in the end, the amount of love you give to them and get back in return will always be worth it! So why not adopt from a local shelter or rescue group? Every year, millions of animals are euthanized for one reason or another. Should one of those reasons really be due to lack of space? Imagine that decision being made for a litter of puppies that were born on the streets! Or a 17 year cat that was dropped off at the shelter because their family wanted a younger cat! According to the Humane Society of the United States, 6-8 million animals will walk into a shelter each year and many will never walk out, to no fault of their own! When you adopt from a local shelter or rescue, you are saving more than one life! Not to mention they are literally thousands of dollars cheaper (some shelters charge $100.00 adoption fee compared to $2,500 and up at a pet store. For the price of 1 pet, you could be saving 25!!!), come fully vaccinated (depending on their age), spayed/neutered (again, depending on their age) and they KNOW you have just saved their life from an unfortunate end.
I hear on the news more times than I care to count about hoarding situations, animals being left behind when families move away, puppy mills being shut down, animals being used as bait for fighting and all of them are left wondering what is happening to them. No animal asks for a life of cruelty, abuse or neglect! They only want to love and be loved in return! Imagine the difference you can make by adopting your new family member vs. buying one from a pet store or a backyard breeder that is only wanting to make a quick buck! You have the opportunity to change not just your life by rescuing, but so many others as well!
Thanks to Shelter Pet Project , it is super easy to find a shelter near you! Keep in mind, not every shelter or every pet is listed, so it’s important to stop into you local shelters in person! And remember, shelters and rescues are taking in new animals every day! So if you can’t find what you are looking for right away, keep checking back! If you are looking for a purebred, don’t fret! On average, 25 percent of the pets in shelters are purebreds! And don’t forget about the breed specific rescues that have purebreds as well!
Maybe you aren’t ready to adopt, and that’s O.K too! Animal shelters and rescue groups are ALWAYS looking for fosters! If that is something you might be interested in, I encourage you to reach out to a local shelter or rescue and ask them about getting started! Either way, you are still making a difference in their lives as well as yours!
